Three Top Tips for Lighting Your Kitchen

Screen Shot 2017-03-02 at 2.29.06 PMWhen you’re planning a kitchen renovation, lighting might not be foremost in your mind. The fact is, though, that kitchen lighting is both an aesthetic concern and a safety issue. The right fixtures not only pull your design together but also provide required lighting for tasks like chopping and searing. Here are three key considerations when choosing lighting for your new kitchen.

Think Three Layers of Light

Designers recommend that homeowners install three “layers of light” in each room. This is especially important in the kitchen, which increasingly tends to be the focal point of entertaining. The layers include task lighting, such as spotlights for work areas or in the pantry; accent lights, such as recessed fixtures that add depth to the space; and decorative lighting, such as pendant fixtures or chandeliers that add design appeal.

Make a Plan

The number, placement, and type of lights largely depend on the size of your space and the colors you’ve chosen, since darker finishes require additional lighting. Task lights should ideally be positioned about 30 inches above the workspace. Ambient lights should be about 24-42 inches apart, designed to light the entire room. Decorative fixtures can be added as needed to provide visual interest and additional light.

Consider Controls

When it comes to kitchen lighting, each of the three types of lighting should be controlled separately, with dimmer switches installed for each. This allows you to create the perfect ambiance for every gathering, whether it’s an elegant dinner party or casual family meal. In addition, choose Energy Star bulbs that are 2700 to 3000 Kelvin for a warm, inviting glow, with a CRI of 80 or higher.

Planning the details of a kitchen renovation is a big project, but with these lighting tips, you can ensure that the new space will brighten the overall value and appeal of your home.
